You’ve probably removed hundreds of tiny stickers from apples, bananas, peppers and avocados without giving the numbers much thought.
Those numbers are called PLU codes—Price Look-Up codes—and they help stores identify loose produce correctly at checkout.
They can give consumers a little useful information, but the system is much simpler than many viral posts make it sound.
Four digits: conventional produce
A standard four-digit PLU is used for conventionally grown produce.
That does not mean the sticker tells you exactly how the crop was grown. It does not identify which pesticides were used, whether none were used, or whether an approved coating was applied.
A 9 in front: organic produce
In the standardized PLU system, organic produce is identified by placing 9 before the conventional four-digit code.
So if you are specifically comparing organic and conventional produce, the 9 prefix is the main PLU distinction worth remembering.
What about 5 and 8?
Claims about these numbers circulate frequently online.
A five-digit number beginning with 5 is not a recognized GMO warning in the international PLU system. IFPS guidance says 9 is the established prefix for organic produce; other five-digit codes may belong to proprietary systems.
The number 8 was once reserved as a possible GMO prefix, but it was never used at retail. Those number ranges have since been repurposed for additional PLU codes, so a leading 8 should not be used to decide whether produce is genetically engineered.
A sticker is not a food history
PLU codes are practical retail tools. They are not designed to tell consumers everything about farming methods, pesticide use, coatings or processing.
That is why it is worth learning the real system rather than relying on dramatic social-media claims.
